.au domain names

From 24 March 2022 registration of .au domain names will be open to persons and entities with a verifiable Australian presence as set out in the eligibility criteria in the .au Licensing Rules.

It will then be open:

  • to apply to register new .au names that are not already registered in any existing .au name space (such as .com.au) on a first come, first served basis; and
  •  to apply for the exact match of an existing name in any existing .au name space.

For exact matches, there is a 6 months Priority Application Period from 24 March 2022 to 20 September 2022 where applicants with an existing domain name will have priority status to apply for the corresponding .au domain name. The .au exact match will be allocated according to a Priority Allocation Process which includes a mechanism for dealing with situations where more than one owner of an existing domain name applies for a priority hold on the corresponding .au domain name, with priority over such contested names determined by reference to the existing domain creation dates (and particularly whether they were created before or after 4 February 2018). In some cases, it may be necessary for applicants to negotiate.

After the Priority Application Period, if there are no applications from an eligible registrant of an exact match domain name, the corresponding .au domain name will become available to the public on a first come, first served basis.
